Tips for Reducing Your Home or Business's Energy Consumption
Saving energy is on everyone's mind, at home and at work. Using energy costs money and creates greenhouse gases. By reducing your energy consumption, you can lower your monthly utility bills and business overhead costs while being friendlier to the environment.
Upgrade Appliances
Changing your appliances, and even the bulbs in your light fixtures, is a great way to conserve energy. Energy-efficient appliances will reduce your overall consumption and make your electrical system more efficient. Switching from incandescent lightbulbs to CFLs (compact fluorescents) throughout a building can help you realize great energy savings. For example, a common 60 watt incandescent bulb uses, as you might imagine, about 60 watts to illuminate. An equivalent CFL bulb uses only 13 watts, and can last more than four times as long.
An old refrigerator is often an energy hog, lacks the storage space and high-tech features of a newer model. Businesses that use a lot of machines, such as multifunction and fax machines, can benefit from choosing models that are known for their energy efficiency or that even have Energy Star certifications.
Change Your Habits
Simply flipping a switch as you leave a room can make a difference. This is especially true for larger office buildings. You may want to consider having motion sensors, sometimes called occupancy sensors, installed by your electrician to automate the control of illumination. Upgrade your thermostat and, if necessary, HVAC system to increase your control and efficiency. Close your windows and blinds to conserve heating and cooling energy, and have an electrician inspect your electrical components on a regular basis to ensure everything is running smoothly and safely.
